LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of WyomingCowgirl soccer team lost to the UNLV Rebels, 3-1, Sunday afternoon atthe Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field in Las Vegas, Nev.
With the loss, the Cowgirls fall to 7-5-4 overall and 1-2 in theMountain West Conference, while UNLV improves to 10-3-2 and 3-1 in MWCplay.
UNLV came out and got the best of the Cowgirls on the offensive endthroughout the match, outshooting Wyoming 25-9. They scored theirfirst goal of the game at the 22:48 mark of the first half when AnniiMagliulo headed a rebound into the back of the Cowgirl net. EricaFrizzell and Jessica Brown picked up assists on the goal. JessicaDestito put the Rebels up 2-0, with a goal at the 33:42 mark on anAshley O'Harrow assist. The Cowgirls trailed 2-0 at the half.
The Cowgirls, playing without center defender Kristen Stangl who wasinjured against San Diego State, could not find an answer to the UNLVoffense and they scored a insurance goal in the 83rd minute to go up3-0. Frizzell put a Magliulo cross into the back of the Cowgirl netfor the goal. Wyoming junior Mercy Adetoye put the Cowgirls on theboard in the 89th minute when she beat two Rebel defenders and scoredon a breakaway. The goal however was to little and too late and theCowgirls fell to the Rebels by a final score of 3-1.
"Today wasn't our best day, we came out a little sluggish,"said UW head coach Anne Moore. "We weren't as organized ondefense as we normally are because of some injuries and that reallyhurt us. Hopefully we can come back, have a good week of practice,and have better performances as we close out the regular season athome."
The Cowgirls will return to Laramie to close out the regular seasonwith three MWC matches at home. They will play host to BYU thisThursday and to Utah on Saturday. Thursday's game is set for 3 p.m.and Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m. Both games will be playedat the UW Soccer Stadium. The Cowgirls will close out the regularseason against New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 3.
