Cowgirl Soccer Wins First Ever WAC Game

October 16, 1998

The University of Wyoming women's soccer team improved their season record to 4-9-0 overall, 1-2-0 in the WAC with a 4-1 victory over TCU today at the UW Soccer Field. The win was the first ever WAC conference win for the Cowgirls, marked the first time in UW soccer history that the team has scored four goals in one game and gave UW a winning home record thus far this season with a 4-3-0 mark. The loss dropped TCU's season record to 7-6-0 overall, 1-2-0 in the WAC.

The game was played in very adverse weather conditions, as it snowed throughout the game, making the field very slick, and with the wind blowing hard the entire time, dropping the temperature well below freezing.

The Cowgirls were led offensively by Kelly McShane and Katrina Morton, who each had a goal and an asssit on the day. Jenny Grant and Erica Campbell also scored goals for Wyoming.

The Cowgirls dominated the game from begining to end, outshooting TCU 20-14, setting the pace early and playing on TCU's half of the field all day. UW's defense was superb, led by Amanda Vandervort in goal with eight saves and by senior defenders Amanda Murray and Molly McBride, who did an excellent job of not letting a very slick ball get behind them. The win by Wyoming breaks a five game losing skid.

Wyoming's next home match will be this Sunday, Oct. 18, at the UW Soccer Field at 1:00 pm. The Cowgirls will take on perennial WAC power SMU, as they look for their second WAC victory of the season.

Post Game Quotes from Head Coach Liza Grant: "The way we came out, and to get a goal in the first half was critical to our victory. We didn't have just one star today and that was great as well.

"This last week was our rebuilding week, and I think we did an excellent job of redefining who we are as a team today.

"SMU will be a more talented than TCU was, and they will be a faster team, so we need to be ready to play."

Post Game Quotes from sophomore Kelly McShane: "We go out to win, we expect to win, and we went out today with confidence. We had a great week of practice, and we wanted to get back on the winning track, so it was very important for us to win, and not only to win, but to dominate."
