Cowgirls Fall to SMU 3-0

October 18, 1998

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming womens soccer team lost to the SMU Mustangs today by a score of 3-0. SMU scored once in the first half and then added two second half goals to give them their third WAC win of the season and to raise their record to 7-7-0, 3-1-0 in the WAC. The loss by the Cowgirls drops their record to 4-10-0 overall, 1-3-0 in the WAC.

The Cowgirls stayed right with the Mustangs in the first half of play and would have gone into halftime tied 0-0 with SMU if not for a defensive error that led to an SMU goal by Nicole Lamb at 35:46. Lamb took a bouncing pass in front of the goal from Tara Comfort and headed the ball past UWs diving goalkeeper Amanda Vandervort, in what proved to be the game winning goal for SMU.

The second half of play was dominated by SMU, as they had the Cowgirls on their heels for the entire period. SMUs strong offensive game allowed Lamb to get her second goal of the day at 56:04, and then the Mustangs got their third and final goal at 81:58 from Tara Comfort.

The Mustangs outshot UW 19-4 for the day, forcing Vandervort to make nine saves for the Cowgirls, while SMUs goalkeepers were only faced with making two saves.

The Cowgirl's next and final home game of the season will be Sunday, Nov. 1 versus Kansas at 1:00 pm. Their next road matches will be next week versus the University of New Mexico and UTEP. UW plays New Mexico, 1-12-2, 0-4-0 WAC on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 pm, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, then plays UTEP, 9-4-0, 1-1-0 WAC (as of 10/15) on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1:00 pm, in El Paso, Texas.

Post game quotes from head coach Liza Grant: "I was pleased with the way we played in the first half up until the point where we made a mental error on that first goal. That play set the tone for the rest of the game, and from then on we were not playing pro-active, we were playing defensive.

"In the second half we were standing around waiting for people, and it wasnt that we were tired, its that we werent creating things. We didnt show up to play. We have to be ready to play every game, no matter who our opponent is. Not only do we have to show up for one game, but we need to be ready to play two games in a weekend and that is something weve struggled with this season.

"Our next two games are must win situations for us. Were looking to get into the WAC tournament right now and that has to happen in the next two games."
