Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of WyomingCowgirl soccer team gave up two first half goals and were never ableto rebound as they fell to Utah 2-0, Saturday afternoon at the UWSoccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowgirls fall to 9-5-4 overall and 2-3 in theMountain West Conference. Utah improves to 11-4-2 and 3-1-1 in MWCplay.
Despite playing a very good first half, the Cowgirls gave up thefirst goal of the game to Hailey Marsh as she scored on a WhitneyDorsey corner kick at the 27:24 mark. The Utes then went up 2-0, asthe Cowgirls scored on their own goal when a pass intended for UWgoalkeeper Ashley Sheppard found the back of the UW net. The goalcame at the 31:48 mark. After a very physical first half, the Utestook a 2-0 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
Despite outshooting Utah 11-5 in the second half, the Cowgirls wereunable to convert on any of their shots and the game ended in a 2-0win for Utah.
Sheppard shouldered the loss in the Cowgirl net, making five saves.Ashley Mason picked up the win in the Utah goal making nine saves.
"I thought we played well enough to win but things just didn'tfall our way," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "The first half wasa real battle between both teams. I thought we did a better job ofputting the ball on the ground in the second half and also did abetter job of playing our game.
"We created more opportunities offensively today but we couldn'tfind a way to finish. Today was a very frustrating loss foreverybody."
The Cowgirls will close out the regular season next Saturday as theyhost New Mexico. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the UW SoccerStadium and will be senior day for six Cowgirl Seniors. MelissaBowman, Darci Ferrell, Mari Gomes, Meghan Racette, Sarah Skinner andLindsey Vossbrink will all play in their final soccer match asCowgirls in Laramie.
