Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of WyomingCowgirl soccer team lost to Utah, 1-0, in the first round of the 2004Mountain West Conference Championships, Wednesday afternoon in Provo,Utah.
The Cowgirls fall to 9-7-4 overall, the best finish in Wyoming soccerhistory. Utah improves to 12-5-2 and will play the MWC regularseason champion, UNLV, in the second round of the championshipstomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
Utah scored the only goal of the match at the 35:43 mark when CarisseWinegar scored on a Whitney Dorsey corner kick. Winegar received thecorner kick, made a couple of moves in the box and put the eventualgame winner into the back of the Wyoming net.
Wyoming played a more organized second half, taking four shots, butwere unable to tie the match.
Utah outshot the Cowgirls 13-5 on the day. Senior Sarah Skinner led the Cowgirls with a pair of shots while freshman goalkeeper AshleySheppard recorded four saves in the match.
"I thought in the first half we did a bit of chasing and we weredisorganized," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "We did a muchbetter job of taking care of the ball in the second half. We had somegreat opportunities but just couldn't finish."
