Cowgirl Soccer Begins Spring Practice

Feb. 22, 2007

Spring is in the air and the Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer team is chomping at the bit to start working toward a Mountain West Conference Championship.

The Cowgirls began practice this week and will kick off their spring schedule this weekend as they host their annual indoor tournament in War Memorial Fieldhouse on Feb. 24. The Colorado School of Mines and Laramie County Community College will each participate in this year's tournament. Each school will have two teams participating for the eight-on-eight matchups and games will begin at 9 a.m. and run through 2:20 p.m.

"Our goal this spring is to become more offensive attack minded," head coach Anne Moore said. "We want to become better at taking on people one-on-one and attacking from all fields."

Wyoming returns seven starters including First Team All-MWC selection Emily Layton as a freshman, and senior-to-be goalkeeper Ashley Sheppard, who has 257 career saves, fourth all-time in Cowgirl Soccer history.

"We have a very cohesive group and everyone is trying to improve their game," Moore continued. "Our strength coach Kathy Crowe has been pushing them hard in the weight room and we have seen great improvement from all our players."

The Cowgirls will also be hosting a free clinic this Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. All kids between the ages of 4-14 are welcome to participate.
