April 14, 2005

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team will close out its spring season by hosting an outdoor tournament this Saturday at the North Forty Practice Fields and at the UW Soccer Stadium.

The Cowgirls will welcome four teams to Laramie in Weber State, Northern Colorado, Utah Valley State and Metro State. Each team will play two, 80 minute games on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

The Cowgirls will begin the tournament Saturday at 10 a.m. as they take on the Utah Valley State Wolverines. They will then close out the tournament with the Metro State Roadrunners at 2:30 p.m.

Last weekend, the Cowgirls traveled to California for games with three NCAA Tournament teams in Cal-Poly, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. In their first game on Saturday, the Cowgirls dropped a 1-0 game to Cal-Poly as the Mustangs scored the lone goal of the game midway through the second half. The Cowgirls just missed tying the game with two minutes left as one of their shots hit the post.

In their second game, the Cowgirls took on the National Runners-Up in UCLA. The game was knotted in a 0-0 tie until the Bruins scored on a corner kick with just two minutes remaining in the second half. They added an insurance goal with just a few seconds left to edge the Cowgirls 2-0.

Sunday, the Cowgirls dropped a tough 4-0 game to Santa Barbara.

"Despite our record I am extremely impressed with how our team battled with three NCAA Tournament teams," said UW head Coach Anne Moore. "We played especially well against UCLA who lost last year's national championship game in a shoot-out.

"We had a great work ethic all weekend long, battled hard in every game and showed that we can play with some of the best teams in the country."

The Cowgirls will put a finishing touch on their spring this Sunday with their annual Alumni Game. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at the UW Soccer Stadium.
