April 25, 2011

The Wyoming Cowgirl Soccer Team concluded its spring season with the annual alumni game and awards banquet in Laramie on Saturday, April 23. The Cowgirls played a total of 11 games during the spring and ended with a 3-2-6 record.

"Overall I was very happy with how the spring season went," Cowgirl Soccer head coach Danny Sanchez said. "Although our numbers were a little low it gave a lot of our players a chance to play a lot of minutes. The good thing was is that it gave our players a chance to showcase what they can do, not only this spring but more importantly next fall. I felt that the competition was very good this spring."

Spring opponents included home games against Northern Colorado, Denver, Colorado Mines and Regis University. The Cowgirls played seven away games against Colorado, Fort Lewis, Air Force, Metro State College, Northern Colorado, Air Force and Colorado College. UW played four opponents from the upcoming fall schedule against Denver, Northern Colorado, Colorado and Air Force recording a 1-1-4 record.

Wyoming began the spring season with the Wyoming Indoor Tournament on March 6th. The Cowgirls played three games against Northern Colorado, Denver and Colorado Mines coming away with three ties.

Cowgirl Soccer then hosted Regis University on March 26th, defeating them by a score of 1-0.

Next up for UW was a trip to Denver, Colo. to take part in the Regis University Tournament on April 2nd. The Cowgirls recorded a 0-2-1 record with losses to Colorado and Fort Lewis, and tied Air Force. The Cowgirls played a single game on April 9th against Metro State, coming away with a 1-0 victory.

The final tournament of the spring for UW was the Northern Colorado Tournament on April 16th. Wyoming Soccer recorded a 1-0-2 record at the Northern Colorado Tournament with a 1-0 victory over Air Force and ties against Northern Colorado and Colorado College.

Freshman forward Ellen McCormick led the Cowgirls in scoring during the spring season, scoring three of UW's five goals. The Cowgirl defense allowed only five goals scored during the 11 spring games.

"At the end of the spring we had only about 9 healthy field players," Sanchez added. "Those players really worked hard and played different positions. All 9 of those players really showed how they can expand their roles for us this fall. I felt all three goal keepers we have did very well and showed well for themselves. I think goal keeper will be our most competitive position in the fall."

The Cowgirls spring season concluded on Saturday, April 23rd with the annual alumni game and awards banquet in the new Wildcatter Stadium Club and Suites at War Memorial Stadium. According to Sanchez, the current Cowgirl's defeated the alumni 4-3 in a spirited match.

The Cowgirls will begin fall practice on Aug. 2nd and will begin the fall season on Aug. 13th with an exhibition match against Denver. Wyoming's regular season will begin on Aug. 19th with a trip to Boise, Idaho to take part in the Boise State Tournament.

At the annual awards banquet on April 23 individual awards were give out for the 2010 season. The following is a list of the individual awards presented at the banquet.
