LARAMIE, Wyo. - A successful 2013 spring soccer season came to a close on Sunday, April 28, with the Alumni Game to connect current Wyoming players with those who came before them.
The Cowgirls won a closely contested match in a shootout to prevail against the alumni at the Indoor Practice Facility, but everyone in attendance knew the significance of the game was much more than the game itself.
"It was nice for the girls to see who came before them and set the standard," said Wyoming coach Pete Cuadrado. "The most enjoyable part was hearing their stories and it was great to see the camaraderie built with the current team members. We also created a new fan base. It's important that former players feel they're a part of the team so they come back every year. We want them to be a part of the process of building the program.
"It was great to have interaction with them," Cuadrado said. "It was a fun match and a fun atmosphere, so it was a good experience for our team."
The event was a nice cap to a strong spring season for the Cowgirls, who finished at 6-1-1 throughout the four tournaments they participated in.
"Our goal for the spring season was to come together as a team and get some competitive fight to us, which we feel we accomplished over the past few months," Cuadrado said. . "The dynamic of the team changed significantly when you graduate seven seniors. It was nice to get in a few road trips and have time to bond. They're familiar with the system and you can talk to them like upperclassmen.
"The start of the spring season really brought us together and made us compete. Whenever you finish strong, you're in a good spot moving forward. When you see improvement from the beginning to the end, that's a successful season and that's what you want to see. We're happy with what we got out of the girls and were pleased with their hard work."
Before the Cowgirls open the 2013 season in August, they will host multiple summer camps for both teams and individuals throughout June and July. More information can be found on the sidebar of the women's soccer home page on gowyo.com.
