Coming off its most successful season in school history in 2011, the Wyoming soccer team kicks off the 2012 campaign with an exhibition match at Denver on Saturday, Aug. 11.
Game time is slated for 4 p.m. at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium as first-year coach Pete Cuadrado makes his debut.
The Pioneers went 16-5 in 2011 and 9-2 in the Sun Belt Conference as they enter their first season in the Western Athletic Conference. The squad looks to continue their success as they return nine starters and 19 letterwinners having only lost two starters from a year ago.
Pioneer coach Jeff Hooker enters his 21st season as head coach and holds a 270-101 career record at Denver. The Pioneers earned a 9-1 home record in 2011.
Wyoming is coming off an all-time best 12 wins in 2011 and earned its best winning percentage in school history at 63 percent, including nine straight victories. The Cowgirls return nine starters from last year, including MW Freshman of the Year recipient Sara Paul and junior Liz O'Reilly, who contributed four goals and four assists in 2011.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Courtney Merkle is back after earning a school-best goals-against average of .78 in 2011. She earned a save percentage of .845 with 87 saves, allowing just 16 goals on the year in 20 games played. Defenders Ashlyn Mazur and Sydney Jones return after achieving MW All-Tournament Team honors a year ago.
