The University of Wyoming women's soccer team was picked to finish eighth in Mountain West Preseason Coaches' Poll, released Wednesday by the conference. The Cowgirls prepare for the regular season with an exhibition game at Colorado School Mines on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Cowgirls are coming off a 7-11-4 record in 2013 and advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West Championships. UW returns eight starters: seniors Alex Boehm, Hayley Carlton, Alison Clarke, Kasey Curtis, Kristen Howard, Sheree Small, junior Mollee Ramsay and sophomores Sammi Dunda and Mandy Meyer. The squad returns 20 points out of the 82 scored last seasons with Ramsay being the top returning point producer with six.
The last time these two teams met was in 2012 and was a 2-1 home win for the Cowgirls at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. This will be only the second time that these two teams have played each other.
"After our Brown and Gold scrimmage we're just excited to start our season," head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "Being a young team it is about getting the games in and experience. They could be a tough match for us, but it's one weekend at a time."
The Cowgirls' regular season opener will be against Kansas on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. MT in Lawrence, Kan. Wyoming's home opener takes place Sunday, Aug. 24 against the University of Montana where the first 200 fans will receive a free Wyoming t-shirt and there will be a prize raffle throughout the match.
