COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wyoming women's soccer team was picked seventh in the preseason Mountain West Coaches' Poll, the conference announced Thursday.

Defending MW regular-season and tournament champion San Diego State was picked to finish first with 99 total points, including nine first-place votes. New Mexico came in second with 86 total points and garnered one first-place vote. UNLV and Utah State tied for third with 77 total points, as the Rebels had one first-place vote. Boise State (61) and Fresno State (52), finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Cowgirls tallied 45 points in the poll, two points ahead of Nevada with 43. San Jose State (31), Air Force (20) and Colorado State (12) rounded out the preseason standings.

Head coach Pete Cuadrado returns seven starters from his 2012 squad that went 8-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the Mountain West, finishing seventh in conference.

"The Mountain West is always such a competitive conference to play in," Cuadrado said. "We have a good group this year and we want to prove ourselves on the field. I think we'll be up for the challenge and ready for conference play to start."

Cowgirl fans will get the opportunity to see the top three teams in the MW at home this season. New Mexico visits Laramie on Oct. 11, while San Diego State travels to the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex on Oct. 13. UNLV will be UW's last home game of the season on Oct. 27.

The College Sports Madness Preseason poll, released Aug. 5, also named UW's Sara Paul to the MW preseason First Team All-Conference squad, while Lucie McDowell and Alison Clarke earned Second Team honors.

Paul, a junior, was the 2011 MW Freshman of the Year and a First Team All-Conference selection a year ago. McDowell, a senior, was named to the 2012 Second Team All-Conference squad. Clarke, a junior transfer from the University of Tennessee, will see her first action as a Cowgirl this fall.

Wyoming will play its first games next week at the Montana Kickoff Invitational. The first contest puts the Cowgirls against TCU at 3 p.m., Aug. 23, while the second tilt is between UW and Montana at 1 p.m. Aug. 25.
