COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming junior midfielder Loren Mahoneywas named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for her performance's against New Mexico and San Diego State over the weekend.
The native of Sydney, Australia, helped the Cowgirls defeat two of the top teams in the Mountain West this past weekend with victories over the Lobos and the Aztecs, 3-2 and 2-1, respectively. She recorded her first two goals of the season against San Diego State, both coming from free kicks. Her first score came in the 72nd minute as the second and game winner followed in the 75th minute. Her second goal against San Diego State was her second career game winner.
Mahoney, who has started six games for Wyoming this year and played in all but one game, has two goals this year, which has tied her season high. Last season she was also able to record two goals while playing in 17 games for the Cowgirls.
Mahoney's two goals was the first time in her career to score twice in one game. It was the second time this season a Cowgirl has recorded two goals in one game. Senior forward Lucie McDowellachieved the feat earlier this year against Drake on Sept. 6.
This week’s award marks the first time a Wyoming player has won an Offensive Player of the Week since junior Sara Paul won the award as a redshirt freshman in 2011. The last time the Cowgirls received a Player of the Week award from the Mountain West was when Courtney Merkle claimed a Defensive Player of the Week award last season.
Wyoming will return to Mountain West action on Friday afternoon against Fresno State at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. MT.
