Cowgirl Soccer Beats BYU 3-2 In Overtime

Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of WyomingCowgirl soccer team beat BYU for the first time in UW history, 3-2 inovertime, Thursday afternoon at the UW Soccer Stadium.

With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 8-5-4 overall and 2-2 inMountain West Conference play. BYU falls to 5-9-4 and 1-1-2 in theMWC. The Cowgirls are now 1-9 all-time against the Cougars.

The Cowgirls got on the scoreboard first when junior Mercy Adetoyescored her sixth goal of the season. She picked up a cross fromsenior's Lindsey Vossbrink and Meghan Racette and beat the BYUgoalkeeper at the 12:18 mark. Vossbrink then scored her first goal ofthe season at the 30:11 mark to give the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead. SeniorMelissa Bowman assisted on the goal. Wyoming took a 2-0 lead into thelockerroom at halftime.

BYU scored their first goal of the game at the 71:32 mark of thesecond half, when Courtney Asay scored on an assist from Claire Thomasand Bobbi Tillotson. The Cougars then tied the game at two when JamieRendich scored, three minutes later, on an assist from Tillotson atthe 74:48 mark. Regulation time ended in a 2-2 tie.

Just 3:26 into the extra period, Adetoye took a throw-in fromsophomore Christine Nagel and beat the BYU goalkeeper to give theCowgirls their first ever win over BYU.

Freshman Ashley Sheppard picked up the win in the Cowgirl net, making10 saves.

"When Mercy turned and hit the game winner, I knew it was inbecause she hit it perfect," said UW head coach Anne Moore. "Ihave never jumped as high as I did when that goal went in.

"Lindsey had a great first half with a goal and an assist and itwas huge for us to be up 2-0 at the half. We played a littletentative early in the second half, like we were playing not to lose,which really hurt us. When they scored their second goal I think itlit a fire under us and we were able to fight back, gain some momentumand finally win it in overtime.

"In the program's history we have only scored two goals totalagainst BYU, so for us to score three today was huge. We stepped upat home and got the job done."

The Cowgirls will return to action on Saturday when they host MWCrival Utah. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the UW Soccer Stadium.
