The University of Wyoming women's soccer team takes on rivals No. 24 San Diego State and New Mexico this weekend. The Cowgirls will battle for first place in the Mountain West standings on Friday evening at No. 24 San Diego State at 8 p.m. MT and Sunday at New Mexico at 1 p.m. The Aztecs and Cowgirls are currently tied for first in the MW, while the Lobos are fifth. Wyoming owns a program-record, five-game winning streak in MW play after two conference wins last weekend. Freshman forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes
leads the MW-only stats with 20 points off nine goals and two assists, including three goals last weekend."We are excited for the two games," UW head coach Pete Cuadrado
said. "We know we will have our hands full with two very good teams on the road this weekend. Both of the programs have been consistently at the top of the conference and if we want to put ourselves in that category we need to get results against them."
Last time vs. San Diego State:
The Cowgirls trail in the series, 4-12-1, with the last meeting on Oct. 13, 2013, a 2-1 victory over the Aztecs. Wyoming dished San Diego State its first Mountain West regular-season loss since Oct. 16, 2011, at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. In the 32nd minute the Aztecs capitalized on a header from a corner kick. Wyoming responded in the 72nd and 75th minutes off two free kicks.Last time out, San Diego State snapped its eight-game winning streak with a 2-0 loss to Boise State last Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck. With the loss, the Aztecs fell to 12-3-1 and 7-1-0 MW. Boise State nailed its first goal in the seventh minute with a high ball over the SDSU keeper. In the 86th minute the Aztecs' keeper could not field a loose ball cleanly and the Broncos were there to take advantage and net a goal. SDSU outshot Boise 16-8 and 5-4 in shots on goal.
Last time vs. New Mexico:
Wyoming trails 6-13-4 in the series. The last meeting was a 3-2 double overtime victory for the Cowgirls on Oct. 11, 2013, at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. New Mexico got its first and second goals in the fifth and 71st minutes. Wyoming responded with a goal in the 50th minute off a header from a corner kick. UW tallied another goal off a header to put the game into overtime with less than ten seconds remaining in the second half. The Cowgirls found the game winner with less than a minute remaining in the second overtime with a shot towards the upper left corner of the net.In its last game New Mexico fell, 2-0, to Utah State last Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos record dropped to 6-5-2 and 4-2-2 in the MW. Utah State scored in the first four minutes off a corner kick that bounced off a UNM defender and past the goalkeeper. At the seven-minute mark the Aggies scored their second goal off a shot from 30 yards out that floated into the left side of the net. New Mexico outshot Utah State 9-4 and 5-3 in shots on goal.
