LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming women's soccer team will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a Friday night matchup with Air Force before the beginning of the Mountain West Tournament on Monday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. MT and is the final regular-season match for both teams. Last season, the Cowgirls set a new record for goals scored with 30. UW has recorded 29 through 19 games this year.
Last weekend, the Cowgirls (7-9-3, 4-3-2 Mountain West) battled Nevada to a 1-1 draw before falling to UNLV 3-2, in overtime. Junior Sara Paul recorded all three of UW's goals over the weekend. Against Nevada, she was assisted from senior Lucie McDowell to give Wyoming an early lead. Both of Paul's scores against UNLV came in the second half. Senior Liz O'Reilly assisted on Paul's first and became the all-time leader in assists in UW history with 24 for her career. Paul later scored off a free kick for her second of the match.
Wyoming leads the MW with 29 goals and 76 points. With only the final conference game remaining, the Cowgirls are in sixth place in the MW standings with 14 points and a 4-3-2 record. They trail Utah State with 16 points and a 5-3-1 record. Individually, Wyoming is led by Paul and McDowell, each of whom has 19 points this season. McDowell is tied for third in the MW with eight goals, while Paul leads the conference in assists with seven. Junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm has played all 19 games recording a goals-against average of 1.39, 68 saves and four shutouts.
"Air Force is a much improved team from last season," UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. "It will be their Senior Night, so emotions will be high. They'll be ready to go and I am sure will give us everything they have."
Air Force (2-13-2, 1-7-1 MW) dropped a pair of matches last weekend by falling to Nevada 2-1 and UNLV 3-1, before a 3-1 loss at Boise State on Wednesday. Nine different Falcons have recorded one goal throughout the season, while freshman midfielder Ashley Greco leads Air Force with four assists. Senior Kelly Stambaugh has made 60 saves as goalkeeper for the Falcons with a goals-against average of 1.18.
"We are going to look to clean up some stuff and really give ourselves a game plan for things we need to work on," Cuadrado added. "We want to focus on us and make sure we're ready for Monday."
Wyoming owns a 10-6-1 all-time record against the Falcons. The last 10 years have been kind to UW against Air Force, as the Cowgirls hold a 9-0-1 record and have outscored the Falcons, 22-4. Last season, Sydney Jones headed in a corner kick from O'Reilly to give Wyoming the victory, 1-0.
