Wyoming Soccer Earns Five Postseason Mountain West Awards

Nov. 1, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After one of the most successful regular seasons in Wyoming soccer history the coaches of the Mountain West honored the Cowgirls with five postseason awards. Cowgirl redshirt freshman Sara Paul earned UW soccer's first-ever MW Freshman of the Year award. Head coach Danny Sanchez earned the Cowgirls' first MW Coach of the Year award since 2003. Cowgirls Paul and Allison Masumiya earned First Team All-MW honors, while Kayla Davis earned Second Team honors.

"All of our individual accolades come from our team having the success we have had this season," Sanchez said. "It is exciting to have our players be recognized by the coaches of the MW for their performance this season."

Earning the Cowgirls first-ever MW Freshman of the Year honor was Paul, who ended the season as UW's leading offensive player. For her performance she also earned First Team All-MW honors. She finished the season with 18 total points, scoring seven goals and assisting on four others. Three of her seven goals were game-winning goals, which ties her for third-best all-time in a single season for the Cowgirls. Both the awards are the first of Paul's young Cowgirl career.

"I am very happy for Sara that the coaches in the conference recognized her talent," Sanchez said. "She had a really good season."

Sanchez earned MW Coach of the Year honors for his performance, leading the Cowgirls to one of their best seasons in school history. As they sit right now, the Cowgirls have tied the most wins in school history (10) and have the best winning percentage in UW soccer history (63 percent). This is his first MW Coach of the Year selection and Cowgirl soccer's second MW Coach of the Year honoree (Anne Moore, 2003).

"I feel like the Coach of the Year award should be a coaching staff of the year award," Sanchez added. "Jason (Green), Don (Trentham) and Darren (Toohey) should share in this recognition. Again I feel the individual awards are a reflection of our team's success."

Two Cowgirls in Paul and senior Masumiya earned First Team All-MW honors. Playing as a defensive midfielder Masumiya ended the season with two goals (both from penalty kicks) and three assists. She helped lead a very stingy Cowgirl defense that has allowed just 0.81 goals per game and recorded five shutouts. The award is Masumiya's first of her career. Paul and Masumiya's First Team All-MW honors were the first for the Cowgirls since 2008 (Amanda Lathrop).

"Allison has been a four-year starter for us and is having her best season to date," Sanchez said. "We put her in a new position this season and she has really shown her quality in that position. I am really proud of her for her effort this season."

Senior Davis earned Second Team All-MW honors for her performance in 2011. Returning from a knee injury during the 2010 season Davis had a very successful senior campaign. She scored four goals and assisted on five, giving her 13 total points on the season. Three of Davis' four goals were game winners which ties her with Paul and two other Cowgirls for third best all-time in a single season. This was Davis' first all-conference selection of her career.

"Kayla's season shows her determination returning from an injury and her commitment to this team," Sanchez said. "She has had a great season and I am really proud of how hard she has worked."

The Cowgirls will take on the TCU Horned Frogs on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at noon at the MW Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
