The University of Wyoming Cowgirl soccer team will head to San Diego, Calif., to compete in the Mountain West Championships. The Cowgirls will battle the Colorado College Tigers on Tuesday at the SDSU Sports Deck. Kickoff is set for an 8 p.m. MT, start. The Cowgirls will be looking to avenge their regular-season loss as the Tigers won the matchup in the first overtime, 2-1. Wyoming ended its regular-season with a 10-5-4 overall mark and a 6-4-1 record in MW action. UW will go into the MW Tournament carrying a three-game win streak with victories over Boise State, Utah State and Colorado State.
The Cowgirls are coming off a Border War victory over Colorado State 2-1. Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Lomsnes and freshman defender Alyssa Murray tallied goals to clinch the third-straight playoff berth for Wyoming. Sophomore Shaina Ashouri leads UW in goals with nine, assists with seven and points with 25. She also leads the team in shots, racking up 65 during regular-season action. Ashouri climbed to the number four spot on the all-time shots leaderboard in a single season for Wyoming. Last season, the Cowgirls made it to the MW Championship match where they lost in overtime 1-0 to the SDSU Aztecs.
Colorado College compiled an 8-11-1 overall record and a 6-5-0 MW mark. The Tigers are coming off a 3-2 victory over Air Force. CC also holds conference wins against Nevada, UNLV, Colorado State, Wyoming and Boise State. The Tigers are led by senior Sarah Schweiss with 10 goals, two assists and 22 points on the season. CC holds an 8-1-0 all-time record over the Cowgirls.
The match against Colorado College will be the second game of the MW Championship. The winner will move on to face the top-seeded SDSU Aztecs on Thursday at 8 p.m. MT.
