LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Wyoming junior Tamika Wilson was named Co-Mountain West Conference Player of the Year on Tuesday evening. She is the first player in Cowgirl Soccer history to receive the prestigious award. She was also named to the MWC All-Conference First Team and was named the MWC Offensive Player of the Week last week.
"It is a tremendous honor for Tamika to receive player of the year," UW head coach Anne Moore said. "I am so proud of her and it is a fantastic honor."
Wilson scored her 10th and 11th goals of the season, 18th and 19th of her career during last Saturday's win against Utah. Wilson leads the MWC in conference goals (5), points (11) and is in a tie for first in game-winning goals (3). She now holds the all-time record for goals in a season by a Cowgirl (11). Her goals on Saturday puts her in a second place tie all-time in career goals at Wyoming and she is in a tie for first place all-time in game-winning goals with nine. Wilson was also named to the Soccer Buzz national "Elite Team of the Week" last week which was also the first time in history a Cowgirl has been named to that team. The "Elite Team of the Week" is picked from over 5,000 players across the country each week and Wyoming previously had never received the honor.
"Tamika has had a great year and has worked hard to put herself in a position to play the way she has been," Moore continued. "We are sure happy to have her on our side."
Junior Amanda Lathrop was named to the MWC All-Conference Second Team for the first time in her career. Lathrop has scored seven goals this season (12 in her career) which ranks second on the team and eighth in the conference. Lathrop has played a huge role in the Cowgirls scoring attack this season and has collected two assists to go along with her seven goals.
"Amanda has been an intrical part in our offense this entire season," Moore continued. "She creates a ton of opportunities for our team and has the skill to finish as well."
Wyoming will face Utah in the opening round of the MWC Tournament Wednesday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live from Provo, Utah and can be accessed on this site.
