Cowgirl Tennis Wins Three Singles Matches to Begin Spring Play

TULSA, Okla. - Three individuals and one doubles teams earned victories as the Wyoming women’s tennis team opened up the 2016 spring season on Friday at the Hurricane Invite.

“This was a good start to our spring. Our staff really appreciated the effort by the team today,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “The newcomers have made strides towards playing Cowgirl tennis in a short amount of time. Elisa (Koonik) had a big win today which showed how coachable she is and that her hard work paid off.”

In the Gold Flight, sophomore Magdalena Stencel defeated Ciejenia Cornelius of Oral Roberts, 6-3, 6-2. Junior Dorottya Jonas needed three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, against Jovana Antoinjevic (Oral Roberts). The final Cowgirl to come away with a win was freshman Elisa Koonik who defeated Martha Matoula of Tulsa, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in the Blue Flight.

Senior Nastya Tokareva fell to Saana Saarteinen of Tulsa in two sets, 6-1, 6-1 as did junior Miranda Talbert, 6-4, 6-3, against Renata Kuricova of Tulsa. While in the Blue Flight, freshmen Sanne Hoekstra and Tessa van Der Ploeg each lost in straight sets.

In doubles action, the team of Stencel and Tokareva had a nice win against Cornelius and Antonijevic of Oral Roberts. The duo of Jonas and Talbert lost to Leenabanchong and Matoula of Tulsa, 7-5, while Koonik and van Der Ploeg fell 6-3 to Saarteinen and Mahita Dadireddy (Tulsa).

The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT.
