TULSA, Okla. -
Three individuals and all three doubles teams earned victories as the Wyoming women's tennis team opened up the 2015 spring season on Friday at the Tulsa Hidden Duals.
"We are happy with the professionalism the team showed today," head coach Dean Clower said. "By no means did we play our best tennis physically but we showed a lot of maturity and toughness finding ways to win. We need to clean up some of the little things which knowing the team it will do."
Three Cowgirls took away victories in singles action. In the White Flight, senior Jessica Parizher defeated Emma Kranendonk of Nicholls State in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4. She will face Saana Saarteinen tomorrow. Redshirt Freshman Magdalena Stencel earned a straight set win, 6-1, 6-4, over Stepahnie Barnett in the Blue Flight and will take on Marcelina Chichon of Tulsa in her next match. The final Cowgirl to come away with a win in singles was sophomore Dorottya Jonas. She defeated Marie Aubert of Nicholls State, 6-4, 6-3. Her next opponent will be Rongrong Leenabanchong.
In the Red Flight, freshman Cecilia Mercier fell to Katya Nakonechna, 6-2, 7-5, as did senior Christa Gecheva in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, against Klara Skopac (Nicholls State). Senior Silviya Zhelyazkova lost her opener in the Yellow Flight, 6-2, 7-6, against Laia Charles. All three will be back in action tomorrow.
In doubles play, the Cowgirls had a solid day coming away with three wins. The team of Parizher and Gecheva defeated Barnett and Milou Pietersz of Nicholls State, 6-2, in the Blue Flight. Stencel and senior Alma Espinosa earned a solid 6-3 win over Skopac and Aubert in the Gold Flight, while Jonas and Zhelyazkova closed it out with a 6-4 victory against Isla Brock and Kranendonk.
The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. Mountain Time. They will play two rounds of doubles followed by a round of singles action.
