TULSA, Okla. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened up the 2014 spring season at the Tulsa Hurricane Invite, on Friday, in Tulsa. Originally scheduled to face the Hurricane in a dual, they will play in an individual tournament against North Texas, Old Dominion and Tulsa over the next three days.
"It was good to finally get back on the courts again," said head coach Dean Clower. "We are making a lot of changes, the ladies are adjusting to different line-ups which is hard to do as a player. We knocked some rust off today after a long break and were much better in the later rounds. We hope to continue getting back into a better rhythm tomorrow and get ready for the dual season."
It was a tough go for the Cowgirls in doubles play as they started out with matches against Old Dominion and Tulsa. The team of Silviya Zhelyazkova and Christa Gecheva come away with a win on the day. In the Brown Draw, they defeated Niki Khmolovska and Ivana Vukovic of Old Dominion, 7-5, but would fall in their second match of the day to Renata Kuricova and Yelena Nemchen (Tulsa), 6-3. Veronica Popovici and Dorottya Jonas lost to Nikol Hristova and Melissa Esnal Olguin (ODU), 7-5, followed by a 6-4 loss to Samantha Vickers and Isaura Enrique (Tulsa) in the Blue Doubles Draw. The final duo in action on the day was Jessica Parizher and Alena Vasileva in the Green Doubles Draw. They fell to Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic (ODU), 6-2, and Maria Sant'Anna and Rongrong Leenabanchong of Tulsa, 7-5. Alma Espinosa who was partnered up with Ana Sofia Cordero of North Texas defeated Carol Benito (Tulsa) and Faith Atiso (ODU), 6-2.
Two of the seven Cowgirls won their opening day matches during the afternoon session. Popovici defeated Kseniya Bardabush of North Texas by default after being down 3-4 in the match. Parizher needed three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (7) against Alexis Thoma (UNT).
Espinosa, Gecheva, Jonas, Vasileva and Zhelyazkova each suffered a loss in singles action on the first day. Jonas fell to Anastasiya Shestakova (UNT) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, as did Zhelyazkova against Agustina Valenzuela, 6-3, 6-4. Gecheva lost to Kamilla Galieva (UNT), 6-4, 6-1, while Vasileva came up short against Ana Sofia Cordero (UNT), 6-3, 6-3.
