The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team continued play at the Tulsa Hurricane Invite, on Saturday, in Tulsa.
"We came out and played fast aggressive UW tennis, but came up short on the scoreboard," said head coach Dean Clower. "These have been much needed matches for us as we have improved tremendously this weekend."
The Cowgirls started off the day with four teams in doubles action. Veronica Popovici and Dorottya Jonas came away with the only win on the day with a victory over Kseniya Bardabush and Alexis Thoma of North Texas by default. Jessica Parizher and Alena Vasileva fell to Dane Joubert and Austina Valenzuela (UNT), 7-5, while Silviya Zhelyazkova and Christa Gecheva lost to Anastasiya Shestakova and Kamilla Galieva (UNT), 6-3. Alma Espinosa who was playing with Dane Joubert came up short, 6-3, against Marcelina Cichon and Saana Saarteinen of Tulsa.
In singles play, Wyoming faced the 28th ranked Tulsa Hurricane. Samantha Vickers defeated Popovici, 6-2, 6-3, while Yelena Nemchen beat Jonas, 6-3, 6-2. Parizher won the first set over Isaura Enrique, 6-2, but lost 6-2, 1-0 (3) in the following sets. Gecheva also went three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (2), with Rongrong Leenabanchong unfortunately coming short. Zhelyazkova fell to Saana Saarteinen, 6-1, 6-2, as did Vasileva, 6-4, 6-1, against Maria Sant'Anna. In the final match of the day, Espinosa lost to Renata Kuricova, 7-6, 6-4.
The Cowgirls will close things out tomorrow with a singles matches against Old Dominion.
