Cowgirls Open Spring Season with Loss to Nebraska

Jan. 26, 2007

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened up the spring season with a 6-1 loss against the 46th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, on Friday afternoon, in Lincoln.

"I was happy with the way the girls competed in their first match of the spring season," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "We had chances to win in a couple of matches that we didn't take advantage of. I think this should give us confidence going in to our match against Wichita State tomorrow."

In doubles play, the Cowgirls took one of three matches as Nebraska earned the point. The number three UW team of Michelle Brown and Amy Senko defeated Marianne Cicmanec and Ashley Finnegan, 8-5. The number one Cowgirl team of Andrea House and Karolina Rowinski fell 8-4 in their match against Imke Reimers and Maria Ring, while the number two Wyoming team of Corina Lazar and Sarah Summerfield battled it out with Diana Kuhl and Wiveca Swarting coming up short 9-8 (7-5).

Nebraska won five of the six singles matches to earn the win. Lazar earned the lone victory for the Cowgirls by defeating Kuhl 7-6, 3-2 (ret.). At the number one spot, Summerfield fell to Reimers, who is ranked 30th, in two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Swarting beat Rowinski in two sets 6-4, 6-4, as did Ring over Brown, 6-2, 7-5. Senko lost to Cicmanec, 6-2, 6-3 and at the number six position Brown was defeated by Finnegan.
