The 75th ranked Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team (2-1 overall) opened up their weekend with a 6-1 loss against the 33rd ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-1 overall), on Friday night, in Lincoln.
"This was a well played match but Nebraska had an answer for every shot we made," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We will turn around tomorrow and continue fighting."
In doubles play, the Cowgirls lost two out of three as the Cornhuskers earned the first point of the day. The only team to take a match was Veronica Popovici and Carly Van Hollen who defeated Fredericka Putthoff and Maike Zeppernick, 8-6. The 62nd ranked team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel fell 8-6 to Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein, as did Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs with an 8-6 loss against Patricia Veresova and Janine Weinreich.
Wyoming had a tough go in singles play as they won just one match on the day. At the number four position, Kim van Ginkel earned a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Frederika Putthoff. Kovacs had a close match as she fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, to Patricia Veresova as did Sasa Nemcova, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6, against Janine Weinreich. Popovici was defeated by Geibert, 6-2, 6-3, along with Simona Synkova, 6-2, 6-3, against Stefanie Weinstein. In the final match of the day, Jennifer Holmberg beat Carly Van Hollen, 6-3, 6-4.
The Cowgirls will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 5, as they take on the Illinois State Redbirds. The match is set for 11:00 a.m. MT in Lincoln.
