Feb. 10, 2002

Wyoming spring tennis officially opened over the weekend with the Cowgirls coming up short against Army, 5-2, on Sat., Feb. 9 and nationally ranked Missouri, 6-1, on Sun., Feb. 10.

Head tennis coach Pam Wildt was pleased with her team's performance inspite of the losses, considering one of UW's top singles and doubles players, Kati Gyulai, was out of the lineup with an injury.

"We played as hard as we could with a weaker lineup," Wildt said. "Especially versus Army, it was much tougher and closer than the score showed."

Wyoming came out ready for doubles play on Sat. and the number one doubles team of Jenny Bowman and Jennifer Hancock won easily, 8-3. Number two doubles of Yuliani Santi and Paulina del Monte lost a tie-breaker match, 9-8. In singles play, Cowgirl standout Bowman won handily in two sets, 6-0, 6-1 and number two spot Santi defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 after playing through a twisted ankle suffered in the second set.

The heart of the lineup was hard battled with Hancock losing 6-4, 6-4 at number three and both del Monte and Toni Terhaar losing to their opponents in tie-breakers of the third set. del Monte fell in the third, 7-6, while Terhaar ended up losing 10-6, also in the third set. Newcomer Ivana Milosevic rounded out the lineup at the six spot but could not pull off the win.

Sunday's battle against number 70 ranked Missouri was highlighted by Jenny Bowman's easy win over UM's top player. Bowman defeated the number six ranked Central Region player in two sets, 6-1, 6-2, giving her a perfect 2-0 weekend and improving her record for the year to 8-2. Bowman is not currently ranked in the ITA standings.
