The 75th ranked Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team (3-2 overall) opened up the weekend with a 7-0 loss against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Friday afternoon in Santa Barbara.
"We started off with early breaks in doubles but we weren't able to close the matches out," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "All the credit to Santa Barbara for dominating us in singles and not allowing us to win a single a match."
In doubles play, the Gauchos took two out of three matches to earn the first point of the day. The 62nd ranked team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel fell to Lozano and Dockendorf, 9-8. At the number two position, Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs were the only team to win on the day as they defeated Cos and Damion, 8-4, while Veronica Popovici and Carly Van Hollen lost to Novak and Meehan, 8-4.
UC Santa Barbara swept all six matches to secure the match. At the number one position, Veronica Popovici fell to Natalia Lozano in three sets, 6-7, 7-5, 10-4. Jill Damion defeated Alexandra Kovacs, 6-2, 6-2, while Simona Synkova lost a tough three set match, 4-6, 7-5, 10-4, against Sofia Novak. In the number four position, Jordan Dockendork won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 over Kim van Ginkel. The Gauchos closed things out with Paola Cos over Carly Van Hollen, 6-1, 6-1, and Kiersten Meehan, 6-3, 6-2, against Sasa Nemcova.
The Cowgirls will continue play tomorrow against the San Francisco Dons before wrapping up the weekend against the UC Irvine Anteaters on Sunday.
