LARAMIE, Wyo. -
In a spectacular dual that came down to the last singles point, the University of Wyoming women's tennis team defeated the Creighton Bluejays, 4-3, in Omaha, Neb., yesterday. The Cowgirls dual record improved to 1-3 for the spring.
Number one doubles team of Jenny Bowman and Jennifer Hancock won their match, 8-3 and the Cowgirls were up in No. 2 doubles but couldn't hang on for the win and lost, 8-6. Creighton's No. 3 team went on to win the doubles point with an 8-3 victory over UW.
Down 1-0 after the doubles, the Cowgirls went into singles play and took care of business. Bowman won at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 6-2. Hancock won easily at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-0, and del Monte won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1 in an unbelievably flawless match. The Cowgirls lost at the No. 5 and 6 positions and the deciding point came down to sophomore Yuliani Santi's match at the No. 2 position.
Santi lost the first set, 0-6 and was down 5-2 in the second when she fought back for the win, 7-5. She went on to win the third set for the match win, 6-2, and brought the Cowgirls their first dual victory against a Division I school since March 4, 2001 when UW defeated Montana State, 5-2 in Laramie.
"Santi was the champion of the weekend," Wyoming's head tennis coach Pam Wildt said. "She is playing so great right now and when it came down to winning the match, she pulled through for us." Santi went 2-0 over the weekend with her win at Nebraska on Fri., and Saturday's victory. She's improved her season record to 6-4.
"This was a great win, one that we really needed," Wildt said. "We performed well under the pressure. The girls knew we needed this match and it is a fantastic confidence builder. After we lost the doubles point, the girls all knew that they just had to come out and win each match to give us the win. Hopefully this will start a string of good matches for us."
The Cowgirls have next weekend off but hit the road again March 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Bozeman, MT when they face Montana, Montana St. and Gonzaga.
