Cowgirl Tennis Sweeps Bears

LARAMIE, Wyo. -


The Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team (3-2 overall) picked up their first home win of the spring season by sweeping the Northern Colorado Bears (1-5 overall), 7-0, on Saturday. The Cowgirls won all nine of the matches against the Bears.

"We needed this win after last week, we cleaned up a few areas of concern from last week, mostly in our service games," said UW Head Coach Kati Gyulai following the contest.

In doubles Wyoming picked up wins from all three teams. The number one doubles team of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel started the Cowgirls of right with an 8-3 win over Tabatha and Tiffany Knop. Following behind Synkova and van Ginkel, Cowgirls Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger defeated Jennifer Whateley and Sydney Bell, 8-3. In the final doubles match of the day UW, the number three team of Sarah Summerfield and Sasa Nemcova defeated Luiza Crompton and Hannah LaForest, 8-1.

The Cowgirls success in doubles would continue into the singles matches, winning five of the six in straight sets. Summerfield began the singles session by defeating Tabatha Knop in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Kovacs would also win in straight sets shutting out Tiffany Knop, 6-0 in the first set, and winning the second set, 6-2. The number three match between the Cowgirls Synkova and Whateley would be the closest of the day between the two schools. Synkova opened up with a 6-3 win in the first set, but would lose the second set to Whateley, 6-4. In the third tie break set, Synkova would rally to win 10-6. The Cowgirls would win the final three matches in straight sets. Berger defeated Crompton, 6-1, 6-1. At the fifth position van Ginkel would defeat Bell, 6-4, 6-4. The final match of the afternoon featured Nemcova for Wyoming and Jill Kappel of Northern Colorado. Nemcova would defeat Kappel 6-2, 6-2, sealing the Cowgirls sweep over the Bears.

The shut out marks the 23rd time in Cowgirl history they have won every match against an opponent. It also is the fifth time Wyoming has beat Northern Colorado by this margin and improves the Cowgirls record over the Bears 11-1.

"We were very glad to get the job done this afternoon, and we are looking forward to getting on the road next weekend."

Next up for the Cowgirls will be a trip to Las Cruces, N.M. on Friday, March 5 to take on the New Mexico State Aggies, the match will begin at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
