LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming womens tennis team has been in Hawaii this past week competing in four dual matches. The Cowgirls finished up those matches yesterday with a 1-3 record. UWs season record is now 2-8 overall / 0-2 in WAC play.
Wyomings week in Hawaii included a loss to BYU-Hawaii, 8-1, on Monday, 3/1; a loss to Boston College, 7-2, on Tuesday, 3/2; a win over Chaminade, 9-0, on Thursday morning, 3/4; and a loss to WAC opponent Hawaii, 5-4, on Thurday afternoon, 3/4. UWs match against Chaminade was originally scheduled to be played today, but the match was rescheduled and played on Thursday morning.
UW began their Spring Break week with a dual match against undefeated BYU-Hawai'i on Monday, March 1. Unfortunately the Cowgirls could not get the week off to a winning start as they dropped the dual by a score of 8-1. BYU-Hawai'i maintained their perfect season with the win and improved to 12-0.
Sophomore Lisa Pruett got the only win for the Cowgirls as she pulled out a three-set win at the #4 singles position. Pruett came from a set down to defeat Tomoko Sukegowa 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Freshman Natalie Morozova lost a close three-set match at the #2 singles spot to Karin Ptaszek. Morozova fell 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. The remaining four UW singles players all fell in straight sets.
Wyomings next match was against Boston College on Tuesday, March 2. The Cowgirls came out on the losing end of this match as well, losing 7-2.
The only singles victory for UW came at the #5 position with Shirley Mendoza defeating Kim Arbuckle in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Wyoming also earned a team point with the #1 doubles team of Sarah Kay and Lisa Pruett winning their match 8-4.
On Thursday morning, March 4, the Cowgirls played a match against Division II Chaminade and had no problems in winning the dual by the score of 9-0.
In fact UW was so dominant that Chaminade won only two games in all the singles matches played and did not lose a single game in doubles play.
The final dual of their trip was an important one for the Cowgirls as they faced conference foe Hawaii. With a limited number of conference matches prior to the WAC Tournament, each WAC match is key in deciding seeding at the WAC Tournament.
Despite a good effort, UW fell to Hawaii by a score of 5-4, on Thursday afternoon. The loss drops Wyomings overall season record to 2-8 / 0-2 in WAC play. Hawaii improved their record to 5-3 overall / 1-0 in WAC play.
The Cowgirls and the Rainbow Wahine split the singles matches, winning three apiece. But Hawaii was able to win two of the three doubles matches and took the dual victory. Wyoming had singles victories from Melanie Roberts at the #3 slot, Lisa Pruett in the #4 position and Shirley Mendoza at #5 singles. The number two doubles team of Melanie Roberts and Natalie Morozova got the only doubles victory for UW.
"This was our closest match so far this year," said head coach Kilmeny Waterman. "We fought hard the entire match and it just came down to doubles play. Although it was a very disappointing loss, it was good exposure for us to be in a match that came right down to the end. We just have to keep fighting for those close matches."
The next stop for the Cowgirl tennis team will be in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on March 11, when UW will face Gonzaga in a morning dual match and then play Air Force in an afternoon dual.
