Wyoming Tennis Shuts Out Miners

EL PASO, Texas -

The University of Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team (5-2 overall) defeated the UTEP Miners (8-5 overall), 7-0, on Saturday in El Paso, Texas.

"We looked much more comfortable on the court today and that translated to our success," UW head tennis coach Kati Gyulai said following the match.

The Cowgirls, now on a three match-winning streak, defeated the Miners in all nine matches on the day. Beginning in doubles, Simona Sinkova and Kim van Ginkel shut out Dariya Abdrakhmanova and Carolina Deluca, 8-0. The second and third doubles matches of the day also went to the Cowgirls. Wyoming's Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger would win their match against Marina Deluca and Ximena Fuentes, 8-4. In the final doubles match of the day, Sarah Summerfield and Sasa Nemcova defeated Austin Lavalli and Alexandra Glebova, 8-1.

The success for UW in doubles would translate well into the singles as they won all six matches in straight sets. At the number one position Summerfield defeated Abdrakhanova, 6-1, 6-3. The second singles match featured UW's Kovacs and UTEP's Carolina Deluca, with Kovacs winning, 6-1, 6-1. Number three Cowgirl Synkova defeated Marina Deluca, 6-2, 6-4. Also picking up wins for Wyoming was Berger, van Ginkel and Nemcova. Berger defeated UTEP's Glebova, 6-0, 6-3. Wyoming's van Ginkel would defeat Fuentes by shutting out her out in the first set, 6-0, and cruising, 6-1, in the second set. Nemcova sealed the shut out for the Cowgirl's, defeating Veronika Makashov, 6-2, 6-0.

"We timed the ball better today and that helped us push forward for the victory," said Gyulai. "As a team we are looking to continue raising our level of play to further our success."

The shut out victory marks the second of the season for Cowgirl tennis, while also being the 24 in their history. The 5-2 start also marks UW's best spring start since 2005-06 when they started 6-2. The three consecutive victories for the Cowgirls tied their season high from a year ago.

The Cowgirls will conclude their weekend of action on Sunday taking on the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames beginning at 9:00 a.m. in El Paso.
