TAMPA, Fla. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team (4-6 overall) opened up their three match road trip with a 7-0 loss against the 27th ranked South Florida Bulls, on Sunday, in Tampa.
"We probably played our toughest opponent of the season against South Florida," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "I was pleased with the play of Corina (Lazar) and Andrea (House) who put themselves in a position to win their matches today."
In doubles play, the Bulls took the early lead as they won all three matches to take the doubles point. The number one UW team of Andrea House and Karolina Rowinski fell 8-1 to Gabriela Duch and Shadisha Robinson, while Courtney Vernon and Jessica Sweeting defeated Wyoming's Corina Lazar and Sarah Summerfield, 8-2. At the number three position, Cowgirls Michelle Brown and Amy Senko lost to Liz Cruz and Ann-Marie Modric.
South Florida took all six singles matches in order to come away with the victory. At the number five position, House split the first two sets against Duch, 6-1, 5-7, but fell 10-3 in the tiebreaker. Lazar also went to three sets against Sweeting, but came up short 2-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6. Summerfield fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, against Vernon, as did Rowinski against Robinson, 6-1, 6-1. At the number four position, Cruz defeated Senko, 6-0, 6-0, while Brown lost to Iciri Rai, 7-5, 6-1.
The Cowgirls will be back in action, on Wednesday, March 14, against Stetson University.
