Cowgirl Tennis Wins Two

March 12, 1999

The University of Wyoming women's tennis team was in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Thursday, March 11, for a pair of dual matches against Gonzaga University and the Air Force Academy. The Cowgirls defeated Gonzaga by a score of 5-1 in their morning matches and then defeated the Air Force 5-4 later that afternoon.

The two wins by the Cowgirls improves their overall dual record to 4-8, 1-2 in WAC play.

In their win over Gonzaga all five singles victories were straight set wins, with UW's only loss coming at #4 singles. No doubles matches were played since Wyoming had already won the dual match and since they had another dual later that day.

In their match against Air Force the doubles were played first, so UW was down 2-1 going into the singles matches. Wyoming then won four of the six singles matches to take the match 5-4. The Cowgirls and Falcons were tied at 4-4 until UW's Shirley Mendoza defeated AFA's Jen Shelby in a close three-set match that decided the team outcome.

The match against Air Force was a very important win for the Cowgirls since they will only play five WAC duals prior to the WAC Tournament. Conference duals during the regular season are used for seeding at the WAC Tournament. UWs next WAC regular season dual match will be against San Jose State on April 10 in Reno, Nevada.

The Cowgirls return to action on March 26 and 27 when they will travel to St. Louis, Missouri, for duals against Illinois State, St. Louis and Southern Illinois-Carbondale.

Quotes from head coach Kilmeny Waterman:

"We knew that Gonzaga was not going to be that strong, but it was a great warmup because the Air Force courts are pretty fast. We played well and won it in singles, so that gave us some time to rest before we played Air Force.

"Air Force is a much improved team because they have a couple new players. Since we only won one doubles match we were a little down heading into singles. We played well in singles and it came down to four all, and Shirley Mendoza was the last person on. She played a great match. It was a very tough situation because there was a big crowd against her and the Air Force girl really thrives on momentum. Shirley just took the bull by the horns and really wanted it. She knew it was for the match and showed a lot of pride. We had a great day. We really needed that 5-4 win since we just had a 5-4 loss (March 4 @ Hawaii)."
