LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team (7-2 overall) extended their win streak to five matches with a 7-0 sweep of the Loyola Marymount Lions on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles.
"We did an outstanding job in doubles coming out strong and scrambling for balls," said UW head coach Kati Gyulai. "Loyola just beat #55 Minnesota so this is a great win for us. We look to continue improving as we take on Cal State Northridge tomorrow who is also a very good team."
In doubles play, the Cowgirls earned the point by taking two of three matches. The number two team of Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs defeated Jane Pringle and Elisaveta Pironkova, 8-4, while Sasa Nemcova and Simona Synkova earned an 8-1 win over Melissa Valenzuela and Adriana Radinovic.
Wyoming swept singles action by taking all six matches. Summerfield started things off with a straight set win over Pringle, 7-5, 6-3, followed by Kovacs over Estelle LaPorte, 6-1, 6-2. Rebecca Berger won her matches in two sets, 6-4, 6-2, over Valenzuela, while Necomva defeated Morgan, 6-2, 6-2. Kim van Ginkel fell in the first set 4-6 but came back to take the next two 7-5, 10-3, over Audrey Bulkley. Synkova won the first set 7-6, but came back after a 6-3 loss in the second set to win 10-3 in the third.
They are off to their best start in school history with a 7-2 record. The previous was 6-3 in 1997, 2003 and 2006. This also ties the longest win streak which happened in 2004 and 2006.
The Cowgirls will continue their road trip tomorrow against Cal State Northridge. The match is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
