The Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis Team (8-4 overall), lost a close match to the University of Denver Pioneers (5-12 overall), on Friday, 4-3.
The doubles session began with the Cowgirls losing two of the three doubles matches. At the number one position Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel fell to Pioneers Sophia Bergner and Ute Schnov, 8-6. Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger in the second position also lost their match to Julia Bauregger and Emma Isber, 8-6. Carly Van Hollen and Sarah Summerfield picked up the Cowgirls only win in doubles defeating Lorinda Bootham and Mikele Smith, 8-1.
In singles, Wyoming would win three of the six matches from the Pioneers. Cowgirl Kovacs would fall in straight sets to Schnov, 6-2, 6-0. At the number two position UW's Summerfield would fall to Bauregger, 6-1, 6-2. After dropping the first two singles matches the Cowgirls would win three of the next four from the Pioneers. Synkova would defeat Bergner in a close match losing, 4-6 in the first set, and rallying to win the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4. Berger would also pick up a win for UW over Boothman, 7-5, 6-1. van Ginkel would play another close match for the Cowgirls but would ultimately fall in three sets to the Pioneers Isberg, 2-6, 6-1, 5-7. At the number six position, Sasa Nemcova picked up the final win for the Cowgirls defeating Smith in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. In a close match the final tally for the day would be DU 4, UW 3.
The Cowgirls will open Mountain West Conference play on Friday, April 2 in Fort Worth, Texas facing the University of New Mexico.
