Wyoming Tennis Opens Up MW Play with 6-1 Win over Falcons

The Cowgirl tennis team began Mountain West conference action, on Friday afternoon, with a dominating 6-1 victory over the Air Force Falcons. UW is now 7-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

"The players came out and executed everything we have been working on perfectly," said head coach Dean Clower. "In singles play, most of the matches came down to small turning points in each set and we played disciplined tennis. We will rest tonight and tomorrow to be ready for a talented New Mexico team."

UW took a 1-0 lead by taking two out of three matches. Alena Vasileva and Silviya Zhelyazkova defeated Anastasia Hueffner and Marcelli Magday, 8-4, while Dorottya Jonas and Veronica Popovici earned the point with an 8-3 win over Natasha Rizvi and Mary Meyers. Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva fell to Tiffany Tran and Lily Forlini, 8-4 at the number two spot.

In singles action, the Cowgirls continued their strong play by winning five of six matches. At the number one spot, Popovici defeated Tran, 6-3, 6-1, while Jonas needed three sets over Myers, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Falcons only point of the match came with Rizvi beating Zhelyazkova, 6-4, 6-3. Gecheva also went three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in her win over Magday. In the final two matches, Espinosa beat Chloe Forlini, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) followed by Vasileva over Tracy Landram, 8-6.

The Cowgirls will close out the weekend on Sunday, April 6, against the New Mexico Lobos. The match is set for 11:00 a.m. in Albuquerque.
