Laramie, Wyo. (April 10, 2010) - For the first time in school history, the Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team (11-5 overall, 2-1 MWC), defeated the BYU Cougars (7-12 overall, 3-3 MWC), 4-3, on Saturday at the UW tennis complex.
"It is good to win a close 4-3 match like this, we have lost a couple earlier this season and the players really came through today," said Cowgirl head coach Kati Gyuali. "We are very happy the team, this is a big win for us."
The Cowgirls defeated the Cougars in five of the nine matches, including winning two of the three doubles matches. In the first match of the afternoon, Wyoming's number one doubles team of Kim van Ginkel and Simona Synkova were defeated by the 28th ranked McCall Jones and Megan Price, 8-3. The number two doubles match would feature UW's Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs, and BYU's Kristina Doerr and Chie Hayasaka, with UW winning, 8-3. With the doubles point on the line, the number three doubles match pitted Cowgirls Paloma Navarro and Sarah Summerfield against Elle Carney and Elizaveta Ezhova. Navarro and Summerfield would defeat Carney and Ezhova, 8-6, and win the doubles point for the Cowgirls.
The singles session saw UW and BYU each win three matches. Wyoming's number one Summerfield was defeated by BYU's Jones, 6-1, 6-3, who is ranked 52nd in the ITA rankings. In a close match number two, Cowgirl Kovacs defeated Doerr, 6-4, 7-6. The Cowgirls would lose their next two matches as Synkova was defeated by Hayasaka, 7-5, 6-1; and Berger was defeated by Carney, 6-1, 6-3. The number five and six matches would each go three sets and decide the match for the Cowgirls. At the number five position UW's Kim van Ginkel would defeat Price, 6-2, 6-7 (7-4), 6-1. van Ginkel's win would tie the match score three to three, making the number six match the deciding match. Cowgirl Sasa Nemcova would also play three sets with BYU's Ezhova in the final match. Nemcova defeated Ezhova, 6-1, 6-7 (8-6), 6-1 sealing the Wyoming victory.
"With wins like this and against New Mexico, we believe even more we can compete with these top teams in the conference," added Gyuali.
Today's action saw the Cowgirls pick up their first ever victory over the Cougars in 11 tries. Wyoming also tied the school record for wins in a single season at 11, with five matches remaining. The win also moves the Cowgirls into fourth place in the MWC.
Wyoming will continue their weekend of action tomorrow against league leading Utah with the match beginning at 11 a.m. Weather permitting the match will be played at UW's outdoor tennis courts.
