72nd Ranked Wyoming Tennis Loses Tough Match To 59th Ranked Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -

The 72nd ranked Cowgirl Tennis team (10-7 overall, 0-4 in MWC) suffered a tough 4-3 loss against the 59th ranked Utah Utes (11-8 overall, 5-0 in MWC) on Sunday morning in Salt Lake City.

In doubles action, the Cowgirls won two out of three matches to take the first point of the day. The number three team of Veronica Popovici and Carly Van Hollen got things going with an 8-4 win over Sarah Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova, 8-4, while Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs clinched the point with an 8-3 victory against Evgenia Kryuchkova and Lexi Provancha.

It would go down to the wire in singles action as the Cowgirls were only able to pull out two victories. Kim van Ginkel defeated her opponent Lucia Kovarcikova, 6-3, 6-4, while Rebecca Berger came away with a three set win, 7-6, 0-6, 10-4, over Lexi Provancha. The Utes got things going at the number two position with 108th ranked Evgenia Kryuchkova earning a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alexandra Kovacs. Paige Miles earned a straight set win, 6-0, 6-3, against Sasa Nemcova, while freshman Veronica Popovici fell to the 82nd ranked Anastasia Putilina, 6-4, 6-3. Utah would clinch the victory as Sarah Pham earned a 6-1, 7-5 win against Simona Synkova.

Wyoming will be back in action next week with two matches on the road. They will play the New Mexico Lobos, on Friday, April 15, and the TCU Horned Frogs, on Saturday, April 16. Both matches are set to be played in Colorado Springs.
