Laramie, Wyo. (April 11, 2010) - The University of Wyoming Tennis team (11-6 overall, 2-2 MWC) concluded the weekend of action with a 7-0 loss to the 39th ranked Utah Utes (14-6 overall, 6-0 MWC) on Sunday afternoon in Laramie.
"You have to give Utah the credit for the win, they executed under pressure better than we did," said Wyoming head coach Kati Gyulai. "The team has to execute better in some areas that hurt us today."
The number one and two matches of today's doubles action each went into the tie break point. A strongly contested number one match, Cowgirls Kim van Ginkel and Simona Synkova were defeated by Utes Anastaisa Putilina and Paige Miles, 9-8 (7-3). Wyoming's only doubles win would come in the number two match that also went into the tie break point. Number two Cowgirls team Alexandra Kovacs and Rebecca Berger defeated Andrea Maughan and Erin Monson, 9-8 (7-1). The final doubles match of the afternoon saw UW's Paloma Navarro and Sarah Summerfield were defeated by Evgenia Kryuchkova and Lisa Johnson, 8-4.
The single matches of today's contest saw three of the Cowgirls and Utes matches go to three sets. Unfortunately, Wyoming fell in all six singles matches. The first match finishing on the afternoon was the number two match with UW's Kovacs who fell to Kryuchkova, 6-2, 6-2. The number six match against Wyoming's Nemcova and Utah's Maughan also saw Utah come out on top, 6-1, 6-4. Following the number six was the number three match pitting Cowgirl Synkova and Ute Monson, with Monson defeating Synkova, 7-5, 6-1.
The number five match featured UW's van Ginkel and Utah's Lisa Johnson. Johnson won the first set 6-2, but van Ginkel would rally to win the second set, 7-6, but Johnson would go on to win the third set 6-0. Wyoming's Berger would also lose the first set against Utah's Miles, 6-3. Berger would win the second set 7-6, but lost the third set 10-4. The final match to finish was the number one match featuring Cowgirl Summerfield and the Ute's Putilina. Summerfield would also lose the first set of her match to Putilina, 6-3. Summerfield would played a good second set winning 6-4, and would play the third set to the tie break point, ultimately falling, 7-3, in the final set.
"We will rebound from this, and there are areas we are going to clean up that will allow us to execute better under pressure," added Gyulai.
The Cowgirl's will continue conference action will continue next Friday and Saturday, with a trip to San Diego, Calif. to take on San Diego State and UNLV.
