Cowgirl Tennis Drops Two in Reno

April 12, 1999

The UW Cowgirl tennis team was in Reno, Nevada, this past weekend for three dual matches. Wyoming lost their matches on Friday and Saturday to Nevada and San Jose State, both by the score of 5-4. Then, on Sunday their match against Montana State was cancelled because of poor weather conditions. The two losses drop UW's record to 7-10 overall, 1-3 in conference play.

Against Nevada, the Cowgirls split the singles matches 3-3, and then could win only one of three doubles matches, in losing 5-4. Winning singles matches for UW were Natalie Morozova, at #2 singles, Melanie Roberts, at #3 singles, and Shirley Mendoza, at #5 singles. The doubles team of Sarah Kay and Lisa Pruett also scored a team point for Wyoming with their win at the #2 doubles position.

Against San Jose State, UW won only two of the six singles matches, and were down 4-2 going into doubles play. Needing to win all three doubles matches to get the team win, the UW teams were all ahead 7-4 at one point, but the #3 doubles team could not pull out the win and ended up losing their match, giving SJSU the 5-4 team victory.

UW singles players Natalie Morozova and Shirley Mendoza continued their hot play by winning their singles matches, and the #1 doubles team of Morozova and Melanie Roberts, and the #2 doubles team of Kay and Pruett won their matches.

Wyoming will host their one and only home dual match of the 1998-99 season this coming Sunday, April 18. The Cowgirls will play the University of Northern Colorado in a match that starts at noon at the University of Wyoming Outdoor Tennis Courts.
