Women's Tennis Wins Lone Home Dual

April 19, 1999

The University of Wyoming womens tennis team hosted their lone home dual match of the season Sunday and responded with a solid 9-0 victory over the University of Northern Colorado Bears. The Cowgirls took advantage of the beautiful weather and continued their dominance at rare home matches, as UW is now 6-0 when hosting dual matches since the program began in 1996.

The win by the Cowgirls improves their overall dual record to 9-11, 1-4 in WAC play.

On their way to the team victory, UW did not lose a set, despite several close matches, and two individual win streaks were kept intact. Junior Shirley Mendoza defeated UNCs Glory Borne, 6-1, 6-3, to run her streak of consecutive singles wins to an impressive 13. Freshman Natalie Morozova also kept her winning streak alive, as she defeated UNCs Portia White, 6-4, 6-1. The singles victory was Morozovas tenth straight. The wins for Morozova (20-10) and Mendoza (20-9) were their 20th wins of the season, a Cowgirl tennis record for singles wins in a single season.

Junior Sarah Kay and sophomore Lisa Pruett were the first two matches off the court for Wyoming, as they dispatched their UNC opponents very quickly, giving the Cowgirls an early 2-0 lead. The other four singles matches were tighter matches, but UW prevailed in all four and had already won the team competition heading into doubles play.

UW was on the road earlier in the weekend for two more duals and split those matches 1-1. The Cowgirls defeated Denver University on Friday, 5-1, and then lost to Colorado State on Saturday, 5-4.

The three dual matches this last weekend were the final regular season duals for Wyoming, and the next time the Cowgirls will hit the court is April 28 - May 1, at the WAC Tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The University of New Mexico will host the championships, and matches will be played at the Lobo Tennis Club, Tanoan Country Club, the Highpoints Sports and Wellness Center and the Albuquerque Academy. All 16 WAC schools will participate in the championships, and BYU is the defending team champion.

The drawing for seeding will be conducted by WAC coaches via a conference call on Monday, April 26, at 5:00 p.m.

UW has an overall record of 1-4 at the WAC Championships. At the 1998 conference tournament the Cowgirls lost to 1997 WAC Champion San Diego State, 5-0 in the first round, and then fell to UTEP, 5-1 in a consolation round match.
