Colorado Springs, Colo. (April 24, 2010) - The University of Wyoming Tennis team (14-7 overall, 5-3 MWC) closed out the regular MWC season with a 5-2 win over the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Saturday, in Colorado Springs.
"We are very happy to end the regular season with a win over a good Air Force team," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We will take the next few days to rest and gear up for the Mountain West Conference Tournament."
Wyoming started off things on a high note as they would win the first two double matches of the day to take the first point of the day. Kim van Ginkel and Simona Synkova defeated Christen Monreal and Hannah Dake, 8-6, followed by Sarah Summerfield and Paloma Navarro over Tahlia Smoke and Melissa Cecil, 8-6. Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs fell short, 8-7 (4) against Christine Molina and Allie Chermel.
In singles play, the Cowgirls strong performance carried over as they won four of six matches. It began with the number one spot as Summerfield defeated Monreal, 6-2, 6-3, while Syknova won in a tough three set match over Tahlia Smoke, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Junior Kim van Ginkel sealed the victory for the Cowgirls with another three set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Christine Molina. The other Cowgirl to win her match on the day was Rebecca Berger as she defeated Hannah Dake, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3. The Cowgirl's will head into the MWC Championships this week, which begins on Wednesday, April 28 in Las Vegas.
