In a come from behind win, senior Silviya Zhelyazkova led the fifth-seeded Wyoming tennis team to a 4-3 victory in the quarterfinals over the fourth-seeded San Diego State Aztecs on Friday morning in Albuquerque. It’s the fifth year in a row that the Cowgirls are advancing to the semifinals of the tournament. Due to rain in the area, the match was moved indoors to the Linda Estes Tennis Indoor Center.

“We played our style of singles today,” head coach Dean Clower said. “I was talking to Silviya the whole match about the longer the match went on the better for us because we are so physically and mentally strong. I told the players after the doubles matches that this was a fist fight and we just got hit in the mouth. The team responded by coming out with more energy, more grit and turned the match around. We will have to refocus and get ready for another battle against a good Fresno State team. I know this team and we will be ready.”

It was a battle from the beginning in doubles action. San Diego State won the first match of the day as Hailey Johnson and Tami Nguyen defeated Jessica Parizher and Magdalena Stencel, 6-4. The number one team of Alma Espinosa and Christa Gecheva stormed out to solid 5-2 lead over Kristen Buth and Isabelle Hoorn, but would have to hold off a comeback to pull out a 7-6 (9-7) win. Unfortunately, Dorottya Jonas and Zhelyazkova fell short in their match, 7-5, against Paola Diaz and Dora Somoracz.

In singles action, Jonas would get the Cowgirls on the board with a straight set win, 6-2, 6-0, over Kennedy Davis. The Aztecs took a 2-1 advantage from the number two position as Nguyen defeated Nastya Tokareva, 6-4, 6-3. Parizher would defeat Johnson, 6-3, 6-3 followed by Stencel with a solid two set victory, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) against Buth at the top spot to give Wyoming a slight 3-2 lead. San Diego State responded to tie it all up at three with Diaz beating Gecheva, 6-4, 6-4.

It would all come down to the final match of the day between Zhelyazkova and Somoracz. SDSU’s Somoracz won the opening set 6-4, but Zhleyazkova responded in the second 6-3. The third set was all even at two through the first four games until Zhelyazkova ran off the next four to win the set 6-2 and the match in three.

Wyoming will be back in action tomorrow against the top seed Fresno State Bulldogs. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. MT. Live video and stats can be found on GoWyo.com.
