SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
In a match that was delayed by weather, the second-seeded New Mexico Lobos defeated the seventh-seeded Wyoming Cowgirls in first round action of the 2005 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships Thursday in San Diego.
The Lobos gained control of the match early by earning the doubles point. The team of Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek defeated the team of Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski, 8-3. In number two doubles play, the team of Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson earned a win over Corina Lazar and Amy Senko, 8-2. New Mexico picked up another doubles victory when Nora Quintal and Lucy Scott defeated Andrea House and Gwen Moser, 8-2.
In singles play, Maja Kovacek defeated top Cowgirl Patricia Chien 6-2, 6-4 to give the Lobos their second team point. Lucy Scott picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Amy Senko, while Iva Gersic wrapped up the dual match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Corina Lazar
The Cowgirls will now play the sixth-seeded Colorado State Rams on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. MT in the consolation round.
