Sept. 10, 2015

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico -

The Wyoming tennis team had a tough outing to open up the fall season at the Iberostar College Cup on Thursday morning. The Cowgirls were paired up for individual matches in singles and doubles against the Texas State Bobcats.

“We are a very young team and today we played and acted like a young team,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “Hopefully, we learned about ourselves and what we need to do to begin playing Cowgirl tennis. The good news is we get back on the court tomorrow so we can move forward.”

The Cowgirls lost all four singles matches followed by a forfeit in doubles play. Nastya Tokareva and Sanne Hoekstra were matched up against Katy Collins and Bianca Birkenstock but pulled out in the first game.

In No. 1 singles action, Magdalena Stencel fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, against Yadira Rubio, while Pippa Carr defeated Dorottya Jonas, 7-5, 7-5.

Newcomer Miranda Talbert lost to Eva Dench, 6-3, 6-2, while Joy Chia beat Elisa Koonik in a tough battle, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

Wyoming will return to action tomorrow beginning at 6 a.m. MT with both doubles and singles play.
