Provo, Utah - The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened up the 2010 fall season by participating in the first day of the BYU Invitational in Provo.
"We played a lot of good tennis today," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We are through with two doubles teams and we are in two quarterfinals of singles. We had a few disappointing early exits in singles but did a nice job in doubles."
In the Women's A singles play, it was a sophomore and freshman who impressed in the opening day. Alexandra Kovacs earned a straight set win, 6-0, 6-0, over Michelle Warwick of Weber State. She will play Elle Carney of BYU tomorrow in the quarterfinals. Freshman Veronica Popovici went 2-0 to begin the tournament. She went 6-0, 6-0 against Lauren Mulhern of Colorado State and then followed by up with a two set win, 6-0, 6-4, against Naseem Eslami of Weber State. She will play Megan Price of BYU tomorrow.
In other action, sophomore Simona Synkova won her opening match over Veronika Wojakowska, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4, but fell to Aubrey Paul of BYU, 6-4, 6-2. Carly Van Hollen defeated Kelsie Criag 6-2, 6-0, but lost to Tori Arneson (CSU) in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, while Sasa Nemcova was defeated by Melissa Holzinger (CSU), 6-2, 6-3. Both Van Hollen and Synkova will play in the back draw tomorrow.
In doubles play, the team of Sasa Nemcova and Veronica Popovici won two matches to move into the quarterfinals on Friday. They earned an 8-0 victory over Justine Gallacci and Jenny Phillips and then defeated Arneson and Holzinger of Colorado State, 5-0 (inj.) They will play the top seed Callie Craig and Megan Price of BYU tomorrow. The other team of Simona Synkova and Carly Van Hollen also moved forward as they defeated Naseem Eslami and Brittny Moore of Weber State, 8-4. Their next match will come against Julie Tukuafu and Kristina Voytsekhovish of Utah State.
The Cowgirls will continue play tomorrow with both singles and doubles action.
