The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team opened up the 2009 fall season on Thursday as they participated in their first day at the BYU Invitational in Provo.
"We had a great first day of this tournament," said UW head coach Kati Gyulai. "We won six of seven first matches in singles, three of four in doubles and have two newcomers in the semifinals of singles. We look forward to improving on that play in the draw tomorrow."
In Category B singles play, two newcomers got off to a promising start. Paloma Navarro went 2-0 with straight set victories over Carla Limon of Utah State, 6-2, 6-2, and Lauren Mulhern (CSU), 6-3, 6-2. She will play Aubrey Paul (BYU) in the semifinals tomorrow. Sa?a Nemcová also completed her day undefeated. She earned a straight set win, 6-1, 6-0, against Britney Watts of Utah State, and Keya Jenkins of Weber State, 6-2, 6-0. Her next opponent will be Andrea Maughan of Utah.
In Category A singles, Carly Van Hollen defeated Greyce Farias (Weber State), in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1, but lost in her second match of the day to Paige Miles (Utah), 6-3, 6-4. Juniors Rebecca Berger and Kim van Ginkel each won their first round matches as well. Berger defeated Chie Hayasaka of BYU, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, while van Ginkel earned a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Caitlin Fluegge of CSU. They each lost to their second round opponents and will play tomorrow in the backdraw. Sarah Summerfield also won her first round match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, over Kristen Stople of Colorado State, unfortunately she fell short against Missy Harris (Utah) in three sets, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (5), 6-0. In her first match as a Cowgirl, Alexandra Kovacs fell to Erin Monson of Utah, 7-6 (1), 6-2.
In doubles play, it was the team of Paloma Navarro and Carly Van Hollen who got things started off on a good note. They earned a tough 9-8 win over Caitlin Fluegge and Veronica Wojakowska of Colorado State, and then defeated Hailey Swenson and Jaclyn West (Utah State), 8-2. Sa?a Nemcová and Kim van Ginkel also won their opening match over Greyce Farias and Keya Jenkins, 8-5. The other doubles team to compete was Rebecca Berger and Sarah Summerfield as they lost 8-3 against Missy Harris and Evgenia Kryuchkova.
The Cowgirls will continue play tomorrow with both singles and doubles action.
