The Wyoming tennis team opened up the Air Force Invitational with three wins in singles and a doubles victory on Friday morning in Colorado Springs.
“It was good to see the newcomers get some victories this morning,” UW head coach Dean Clower said. “As for the team, we played a little better but still have a long way to go. We will practice this afternoon, work on a few areas and hopefully take more strides forward.”
UW started out the day in doubles with three teams and one player in action. Magdalena Stencel and Tessa van Der Ploeg came out on top with a 6-2 win over Katy Collins and Eva Dench of Texas State. Pippa Carr and Yadira Rubio edged out Dorottya Jonas and Elisa Koonik, 7-6 while Miranda Talbert and Sanne Hoekstra fell to Bianca Birkenstock and Joy Chia, 6-3. Playing with Renu Sharma of Eastern Michigan, Nastya Tokareva lost 6-3 against Elizabeth Barnickel and Sierra Stapper of Air Force.
In singles play, the Cowgirls finished with a 3-4 mark. van der Ploeg battled to a three-set win, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6, over Ansley Boaman followed by Koonik in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, over Jordan Henry. Newcomer Talbert was the other Cowgirl to come away with a victory against Leah Davis, 6-3, 6-3.
Stencel opened up her weekend with a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Lucile Pothier as did Tokareva in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, against Whitney Williams. Nada Marianovic beat Jonas, 7-5, 6-1 and Hoekstra fell to Stapper, 6-3, 6-1.
Wyoming will return to action tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. MT with both doubles and singles play.
