COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Five wins in singles action highlighted the day for the Wyoming tennis team with play continuing at the Air Force Invitational on Saturday in Colorado Springs.
“We played another day and continue to get better,” head coach Dean Clower said. “During singles play the upperclassmen really played with a lot of passion and showed how we compete the Cowgirl way. We still have a lot to work on but today was a step in the right direction.”
The Cowgirls battled back in singles play by taking five of seven matches on Saturday. UW was led by Magdalena Stencel with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Nini Guenslet followed by Nastya Tokareva over Sabrina Demerath, 7-6, 6-2. Dorottya Jonas only lost three games with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lexi Turley followed by Tessa van Der Ploeg beating Maggie O’Meara 7-5, 7-5. Wyoming’s final singles match victory came from Sanne Hoekstra with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Veronica Dodds.
It was a tough outing in doubles action on the second day of the tournament for UW. Jonas and Koonik were the only team to come away with a victory. The duo defeated Tracy Landram and Dodds, 6-2.
