Pullman, Washington - The Cowgirl Tennis team opened their fall season, on Friday, at the Washington State Invitational in Pullman, Washington.
The only Cowgirl to both of her matches on Friday was sophomore Gwen Moser. She earned wins over Connie Head of Gonzaga, 6-1, 7-6 (2), and Hayley McDonald of Montana, 6-2, 6-2. She will play Anna Curtolo of Boise State in her semi-final match, Saturday. Sophomore Patricia Chien began her day with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Sunel Nieuwoudt of Idaho, but rebounded with a three set win, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (4), over Vera Vasileva of Montana State. She will play Jame Buterbaugh of Gonzaga in the fifth place match, Saturday. Senior Jen Hancock also won her consolation match over Laurel Brown of Montana State 6-1, 6-3 after losing in the first round to Lorena Arias of Washington State, 6-2, 6-4. Hancock will face Kendall Bates of Gonzaga in the fifth place match.
Yuliani Santi was another Cowgirl to win her opening match of the season by defeating Mariel Tinnirello of Idaho in a very tight match 7-5, 7-6 (8). Unfortunately, she came up short 6-1, 6-1 to Washington State's Chris Martinez. She will play in the third place match against Annabelle Janairo of Montana. The other Cowgirl to win her first match of the day was true freshman Amy Senko. She defeated Colby Fannin of Montana in two sets, 7-6 (3), 6-0. Unfortunately, she also came up short in her semi-final match against Megan Biorkman of Boise State, 6-1, 6-2. Senko will face Efrat Leopold of Idaho in the third place match.
In her first college match of her career, freshman Karolina Rowinski fell to Alyssa Ayling of Boise State, 6-0, 6-1, but answered with a strong two set win 6-3, 6-1 over Leigh Orne of Gonzaga. She will play Mariel Tinnirello of Idaho in the fifth place match on Saturday. Sophomore Megan Williams struggled in her two matches to begin the tournament as she fell to Efrat Leopold of Idaho, 6-3, 6-4, and Ivette Duran of Montana State in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. In her only match of the day, Andrea House lost in two sets, 6-1, 6-2, but earned a bye to play in the fifth place match Saturday against Katie Sanders of Gonzaga.
In doubles action, the team of Yuliani Santi and Jen Hancock opened up play with an 8-2 victory over Laurel Brown and Remy Clark of Montana State, but fell to the team of Toth and Sallai of Washington State, 8-5. The young team of Patricia Chien and Karolina Rowinski fell in their opening match 8-1 to Megan Biorkman and Alyssa Ayling of Boise State, but rallied with an 8-2 victory over the team of Torgerson and Fannin of Montana. Amy Senko and Gwen Moser won their first round match, 8-3 over McDonald and Rosen of Montana, but came up short in their second round contest, 8-4 to Ruman and Fielding of Idaho. The team of Andrea House and Megan Williams had a bye in the first round, but lost to Roganovic and Dvornicka of Washington State, 8-4. All of the doubles teams will be in action on Saturday.
